These two old pine side tables were in desperate need of some love! As with a lot of my projects, the renovation took two attempts. The first one was a shocker! I was bored, had a tin of green paint and no project to work on – so basically a recipe for disaster.
Before & after…
The pics below show the tables after I had used the green paint. They might look a bit better than the unpainted version, but definitely not great!
I am not a carpenter, only a painter. So when there is a structural problem with a piece of furniture that I am painting – it stays. The painting techniques I use are generally of the distressed variety, so these sorts of “problems” become “character”.
When the time came to have a second go – I used Charcoal Rust-oleum Chalked paint from Bunnings to paint the tops and French Mist Dulux Chalk paint for the bottom leaving the central pillar unpainted.
As always, I used my special Annie Sloan brushes bought from Mon Petit Palais – they are a bit different to a normal paint brush but they make a huge difference to painting.
I cleaned the tables with sugar soap and sanded the top and bottom lightly before painting. Each table needed 3 coats to get good coverage and then I sanded again. I didn’t go too deep with the final sanding because I didn’t want the green paint coming through!
Then I finished the tables off with two coats of Rust-oleum matt clear protective topcoat.
That’s it. The old pine side tables renovated for good this time. If you would like to see some of my other chalk paint projects have a look here!
